We are deep into apple season as we approach October 1st, and loving it! Our little apple tree only produced about a dozen apples this year, but I am blessed to have neighbor who works in his friend’s apple orchard in the NC mountains during apple season, and brings me apples fresh from the trees almost every week! He sells them at great prices, so we stock up, eat lots of fresh apples, and can applesauce and apple butter all season long.
Here are some of our favorite ways to eat apples:
Plain sliced apples- yum! These fresh apples taste way better than anything you can buy at the store!
Sliced with Sunbutter. It’s not hard to make your own sunflower butter. Here is a good tutorial.
Sliced with peanut butter.
Sliced with Cream cheese apple dip (see below for recipe).
Baked apples with coconut sugar and cinnamon.
Funny thing, we don’t eat that many apples throughout the year because they just don’t taste that great after having fresh apples in season. Plus, the store prices are pretty limiting. Not to mention that most of the apples for sale in grocery stores are last years’ apples that have been sprayed with retardant and waxed to look pretty after sitting in cold storage all year… probably not much nutrition left in those…
Here is a recipe for Cream Cheese Apple Dip that my Mom gave me:
- 8 oz Cream cheese
- 1/2- 1 cup Brown sugar
- 1 Tbsp Vanilla
- Place all ingredients in your mixer and blend together until smooth (you can whip them to be fluffy if you prefer).
- Enjoy with fresh sliced apples!
Sometimes I run out of cream cheese and make a quick version by mixing some Daisy sour cream (I use Daisy because it only contains cultured cream) with a little honey and vanilla. It’s a little less expensive and healthier, but doesn’t taste as rich and creamy. =)
