Wonderful Vapor Rub Recipe

I just finished making another batch of my favorite vapor rub, and thought I should share it with you. I love to give it as gifts or to pass it to friends with sick children because it works so well to give relief during a cold and is gentle enough for a baby.  It even helps aching joints and muscles due to the peppermint oil in it.
I first found this recipe on Crunchybetty.com, but I made a few small modifications.
First, I always make about 8 times the amount that the recipe calls for so that I have plenty on hand and to give away. The amount I make fills between 6 and 8 baby food or 4 oz canning jars, depending on how high you fill them.  Also, I add a little lemon essential oil since it is supposed to help unproductive coughing become productive and get all that yucky stuff out of my kids’ lungs!

Here is my enlarged and updated recipe:

  • 1/3 cup beeswax, grated or chopped into small pieces
  • 2 cups olive oil
  • 8 droppers of about 25 drops each of peppermint essential oil
  • 4 droppers of about 30 drops each of Eucalyptus essential oil
  • 4 droppers of about 20 drops each of Rosemary essential oil
  • 2 droppers of about 30 drops each of Lemon essential oil
  1. Melt beeswax and olive oil together in a small saucepan or double boiler over low heat.
  2. Remove from heat and add essential oils.  I count the drops from the first dropper and then try to fill the dropper up about the same amount each time after.  It doesn’t have to be exact.  You can also add other oils as long as they are safe for skin.  My mom likes to add a little lavender to her rub.  Please research essential oils before you add them and be sure to use high quality oils.  Your kids will be breathing in the vapors.
  3. Pour into clean 4 oz jars or baby food jars.  Any jar of which you can touch the bottom with your finger should work fine.
  4. Allow to harden to a soft spreadable consistency for several hours or overnight, then place lids on jars and store in a dark place until needed.
  5. Wash your dishes with very hot water to remove the beeswax.  I like to boil some water, then carefully pour into my pan and rinse my whisk to easily melt away the wax before washing with hot soapy water.

UPDATE 1/11/16: I recently learned that eucalyptus is not safe for use with young children.  I now use Plant Therapy’s Kidsafe Sniffle Stopper essential oil blend instead of the eucalyptus, rosemary, and peppermint oils. That’s about 16 droppers of Sniffle Stopper blend for this recipe.  For baby safe vapor rub I scale it back by half- 8 droppers for this recipe.  Feel free to scale the recipe down as desired.  I found this info over at Growing Up Herbal.
